USF health expert cites 'misinformation' for rise in Florida illnesses from raw milk


In Florida, raw milk can only be sold for non‑human consumption as pet or animal food, but some drink it regardless, saying raw milk tastes better and can protect them from asthma and allergies. The Food and Drug Administration released a statement last year that drinking raw milk does not cure lactose intolerance, prevent asthma, allergies or osteoporosis, not ‘nutritionally superior’ to pasteurized milk, but carries significant health risks from pathogens since it is unpasteurized.

There’s an outbreak of illnesses linked to people drinking raw milk in Florida.

Raw milk is unpasteurized animal milk that is a common source of foodborne illnesses, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

University of South Florida public health professor Jill Roberts said such outbreaks are becoming more common with a rise in misinformation.

In Florida, raw milk cannot be sold for human consumption but can be purchased for animal food.
